The practical rule for these modern LXT packs
Makita says BL1830B is compatible only with 18V lithium-ion tools marked with the Star Symbol and/or a yellow battery receiver [1]. Makita gives the same boundary for BL1850B [2]. Check the tool's actual battery interface and label; teal color, “18V,” or a similar rail shape is not enough.
What Star Protection means
Star Protection is Makita's communication between equipped tool and battery. The system exchanges data to monitor conditions such as overload, over-discharge, and overheating. Makita's LXT overview describes this communication as part of power management within the LXT system [3]. It is a functional control relationship, not merely a decorative logo.

Why older 18V products need attention
Makita has produced multiple battery chemistries and form factors over time. Its FAQ separates LXT from older Ni-Cd and Ni-MH products and from other current systems. Exact verification sequence
- Record the battery model, including the B suffix.
- Record the complete tool model and regional version.
- Inspect the receiver for the Star Symbol and/or yellow indicator described by Makita.
- Confirm the exact tool in first-party documentation.
- Check the charger separately; tool compatibility does not establish charger compatibility.
