DC18RC is Makita's single-port 18V LXT Rapid Optimum charger, documented on its official product page [2]. DC18RD is the dual-port model that charges two supported batteries simultaneously [1]. The second port is the decisive functional difference for users who need two packs ready together; it does not double the capacity of either battery.

Makita says DC18RD charges two 3.0Ah packs in 30 minutes, two 4.0Ah packs in 40 minutes, two 5.0Ah packs in 45 minutes, or two 6.0Ah packs in 55 minutes [1]. Those are pack-specific manufacturer times, not a blanket time for every compatible battery.
Both chargers manage more than a timer
Makita's Rapid Optimum process communicates with the battery and monitors current, voltage, and temperature. Its FAQ explains DC18RC's charge indicators, maintenance mode, temperature delay, and fault signals [3]. Do not bypass a cooling delay or interpret a flashing fault as a slow-charge mode.
Choose from simultaneous demand
- Consider DC18RC when one supported battery at a time meets the workflow.
- Consider DC18RD when two supported batteries need to charge together, including many 18V X2 workflows.
- Check the exact battery model and the charger manual; “18V” alone is not a sufficient match.
- Confirm the US input version rather than importing assumptions from another electrical market.
