Milwaukee M12 vs M18: two separate battery systems
Understand the M12/M18 compatibility boundary, why a dual-system charger does not make the batteries interchangeable, and how to plan exact models.
They are two separate cordless systems
Milwaukee's own compatibility FAQ says all M12 batteries work with M12 tools and chargers, while all M18 batteries work with M18 tools and chargers [1]. It does not say M12 and M18 batteries fit each other's tools. The brand is shared; the voltage class, physical battery format, and tool interface are not.
A dual-system charger is a special charger relationship
Milwaukee's M12 starter-kit page identifies an M12 charger for M12 batteries [2]. Other products, such as the charger included with the M18 XC5.0 starter kit, accept both M18 and M12 batteries [3]. That dual acceptance occurs at separate charger bays or interfaces. It does not make the battery-to-tool interfaces interchangeable.

Choose around work and equipment, not one universal winner
Start with required tasks, then compare exact tools in the relevant category. A system name is not a hands-on performance result. Tool size, capability, included components, and documented specifications vary by model. Etrenank does not claim that M12 is always lighter for every comparison or that M18 is always more capable; those conclusions require an exact pair and sourced fields.
Plan both systems deliberately
If you own M12 and M18 equipment, record the batteries as separate products. Check every charger by model, because some are system-specific and others support both. When a kit includes a dual charger, verify the exact charger SKU rather than assuming every Milwaukee charger has the same coverage.

- Verify the battery-to-tool pair.
- Verify the charger-to-battery pair separately.
- Keep undocumented combinations unknown.
